Performance per watt is fast becoming an important metric for deciding which hardware to buy, especially if you have multiple PCs. To determine the power efficiency of various CPUs, we measured the power draw at the wall of each test system while running the smallfft test of Prime95 on every available process thread.

Clearly, the Xeon W5580 system is the most power-hungry system, consuming 30 percent more electricity than the Xeon X5482 system. It's difficult to know why this is - after all, the Xeon W5580 does away with power hungry FB-DIMMs and doesn't need a Northbridge with a memory controller. However, Core i7 CPUs are power hungry when performing at load, and given that the Xeon W5580 system is between 15 and 93 percent faster than the Xeon X5482 PC, this is arguably a price worth paying.
